Movement play for therapy and the classroom.

Children and teens play with their whole body on the screen you already have, and the same games go home with their families.

Made for the people who run the session

Therapists, teachers and the teams around them, in their own rooms, and the families they work with.

  • Occupational and physical therapyReaching, stepping, balancing and careful hand work, turned into play by the camera.
  • Autism and ABA clinicsShort, structured rounds, with how much help each answer took kept for every child.
  • Special-education classroomsA movement break, or a calm scene to come back to, on the classroom’s own screen.
  • Sensory roomsA wall or a projector that answers the whole body, as the cocoon at Lane Tech did.
  • Children’s hospitalsPlayrooms and waiting areas, where Ouva has run every day since 2015.
  • Families at homeocco: the same library on the family’s own screen, between sessions.

In a therapy session

Pick who is playing and an activity, and the camera turns a reach, a step or a balance into play. An activity that measures keeps every round.

  • How much help each answer took, from none to shown how
  • Accuracy, timing, smoothness or time on task, where the activity measures them
  • Each measure defined in writing, caveats included
A session’s record in the app: how much help 40 trials took, from no help to shown how, then accuracy, smoothness and time on task, each beside the range across players

In a classroom or a sensory room

One computer and a camera turn the room’s TV, a wall or a projector into a space the whole body plays in.

  • Lively scenes to get moving, slow ones to wind down
  • Nothing to install: it runs in Google Chrome
  • A TV or projector over HDMI makes it room-sized

And at home, between sessions

Families get occo: the same activity library on their own TV, laptop or tablet, so play carries on between sessions.

  • A profile and skill levels for each child
  • Progress in plain words, skill by skill
  • Played in Google Chrome, with nothing to install

Backed by research

Where Ouva has been studied, and where its skills and measures come from, each in its own terms.

Lane Tech College Prep, Chicago

A sensory room in a public high school

HKS designed a sensory wellbeing hub at Lane Tech, a Chicago public high school, with Ouva’s media wall inside its cocoon. HKS’s 2019 report on it, a study run under a third-party IRB with about 60 students aged 14 to 21, found:

  • The cocoon, with its tensile fabric and media wall, was one of the three most-used of 14 interventions, and was preferred by students with autism.
  • Focus, happiness and engagement were observed to improve during a visit, compared with before it, for the hub as a whole.

A design firm’s report, not peer-reviewed, with no statistics. The media wall was studied as part of the cocoon, not on its own.

Designed with nurses and patients

Ouva’s step-by-step design process with Radboud University Medical Center, which built nurses’ and patients’ values into a patient-room platform, was studied and published.

The research behind the activities

Skills and measures from OT and ABA research

Ouva built its skills and measures from a catalog of occupational-therapy and ABA research, reviews and meta-analyses first. Among its sources:

That practising these skills on a screen improves them has not been established, and Ouva does not claim it.

Two ways to start

Bring Ouva into your clinic or classroom, or send occo home with the families you work with.

Ouva for organizations

For your clinic or classroom

Ouva on every screen in your rooms, run from one account, with a profile for each child you see.

  • Licensed per screen: start with one, add rooms as they come online
  • Profiles and groups, with programs for the people who need them
  • Remote support and monitoring for every screen you license

occo for families

Send it home with families

occo is the same library for one household, on the family’s own screen.

  • A profile and skill levels for each child
  • Progress in plain words, skill by skill
  • Plays in Google Chrome on a laptop, a tablet or a TV
